Nekour

نكور

Nekour, an ancient city on the Rif coast of the Far Maghreb between two rivers, one the Nekour rising in the Kaznaya lands; seat of the Banu Salih ibn Mansur kings of Ghumara — the Majus raiders sacked it for eight days in 244 AH, Musa ibn Abi al-Afiya destroyed it in 317, and Ibn Tashfin ruined it again so that it was never re-inhabited 1.

Overview

Nekour is an ancient city on the coast of al-Rif in the Far Maghrib, between two rivers, one of which is also called Nekour and whose source is in the land of Kazanaya, according to Ibn Khaldun. It was the seat of the kingdom of the Banu Salih ibn Mansur of Ghumara. 2

Its ruin

Ibn Khaldun mentions that the Magians attacked it with their fleets in the year 244 AH and sacked it for eight days. He also says that Musa ibn Abi al-Afiya destroyed it in the year 317 AH. It remained empty and was never resettled after that. 2

Majus raid on Nekour, 244

In 244 AH the Majus (Norse seafarers) raided Nekour on the Maghreb's coast in their fleets, overran it and sacked it for eight days, until Sa'id ibn Salih of the Banu Salih gathered Berber succour, met them in battle, routed their host and killed their leader.
