Overview
Anamur is a small town and harbour on the southern coast of Anatolia, the capital of a kaza in the vilayet of Icel. In 1945 the town had 2,734 inhabitants, and the kaza 23,725. 1
Setting and ruins
The town lies on a plain formed by the mouth of a small river, about 5 km from Anamur Burnu, the promontory that forms the southernmost point of Anatolia. Medieval portolan charts call it Stallimuri or Stalemura. On the coast, at the foot and on the slopes of the promontory, lie the extensive ruins of the late antique and early Christian town of Anemurium. 1
The fortress
At the east end of the plain, close to the shore, stands Ma'muriyye Kalesi, a well-preserved medieval fortress that the Ottomans used and repaired; an inscription dated 874/1469-70 records the work. 1
