Summary
Zubaida Sirang is a Pakistani eye surgeon from Yarkhun, Chitral, the first female eye surgeon from her region. A consultant ophthalmic surgeon and Lead of Community Ophthalmology at the Aga Khan University, she established and led eye services for Aga Khan Health Services in Chitral and Gilgit, pioneering the hub-and-spoke model of eye care in northern Pakistan, and is the author of Optics Made Easy, the first Pakistani book to enter a best-ophthalmology-books list. 1 2
Training and return to Chitral
Sirang took her MBBS at the Aga Khan University in Karachi. After graduating she chose to serve in her hometown for more than two years before travelling to Ireland to specialise in surgical ophthalmology. She returned to Pakistan in 2020 and began establishing and leading eye services with Aga Khan Health Service Pakistan in the remote northern districts of Chitral and Gilgit, where Upper Chitral — a population of some 170,000 — had had no ophthalmologist or even optician. 2 3
The hub-and-spoke model and her book
From 2021 she implemented a hub-and-spoke model in northern Pakistan: a central ophthalmology hub in Gilgit with laser and surgical facilities, sub-hubs in Upper and Lower Chitral, peripheral spokes staffed by frontline health workers, and teleophthalmology support from the Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi; in its first year the services she led reached more than 20,000 patients. She documented the model as lead author of a 2026 Cureus article. Her revision book Optics Made Easy entered Book Authority's "Best Ophthalmology Books of All Time" list — reported as the first Pakistani book to do so — and she received a Pride of Pakistan award. She is currently pursuing an advanced fellowship in orbit, oculofacial and reconstructive surgery at the University of Calgary. No source read for this record gives her birth date or names a faith or religious school for Zubaida Sirang, and this record records neither. 3 1 4
