A clever artist and cultural pioneer who lived in al-Andalus, teaching people dining etiquette, fashion, music, and refinement.

Ali ibn Nafi, known as Ziryab, was a master musician and cultural tastemaker who traveled from Baghdad to Cordoba, warmly welcomed by Emir Abd al-Rahman II. Ziryab transformed Andalusian social customs, adding a fifth string to the oud, introducing seasonal clothing styles and multi-course meals, and cultivating refined arts of living.

Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Nafi, famed as 'Ziryab' for his melodic voice (c. 173–243 AH / 789–857 CE), was a polymath musician, poet, and cultural innovator who shaped Andalusian courtly etiquette. After studying under Ishaq al-Mawsili in Baghdad and visiting Kairouan, he entered the service of Emir Abd al-Rahman II in Cordoba. Ziryab revolutionized music by introducing a fifth string to the lute (oud), using eagle-quill plectrums, and establishing a music conservatory. His influence extended into daily culture, introducing seasonal wardrobes, table manners, multi-course dining, and hygiene practices.

Overview

Ali ibn Nafi, known as Ziryab the singer, client of al-Mahdi and pupil of Ibrahim al-Mawsili. He came from Iraq to Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Hakam in the year 206 AH, and the amir rode out in person to receive him and was lavish in honouring him. He stayed with him in good circumstances, and he transmitted the craft of singing to al-Andalus, and his sons inherited his craft and his favour ².

The satire of al-Ghazzal

al-Maqqari reports that al-Ghazzal wrote a particularly foul satire of Ziryab, which was reported to Abd al-Rahman, who ordered his banishment, and he went back to Iraq ³.
