Summary
Zarah Sultana is a British politician, born in Birmingham on 31 October 1993, who has been the Member of Parliament for Coventry South since 2019. First elected for the Labour Party, she left it in July 2025 and co-founded a new party, Your Party, with Jeremy Corbyn. 1
Life
Sultana was born in Birmingham to a British Mirpuri family from Pakistan and was raised with her three sisters in the Lozells area of the city; her grandfather had migrated from Thub in Azad Kashmir in the 1960s. 1 She attended Holte School and King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School before studying international relations and economics at the University of Birmingham, graduating with first-class honours. 1 She then worked in the voluntary sector, including as parliamentary officer for Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND), campaigning against Islamophobia. 1 The English article records, citing an Evening Standard profile, that "Sultana is a practising Muslim", and quotes her describing the abuse she receives as a Muslim and as a woman of colour; no source names a school or order for her. 1
Work
Sultana was chairperson of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs from 2020 to 2025. 1 In July 2024 she was one of seven Labour MPs suspended from the party whip for voting to scrap the two-child benefit cap, and she resigned her Labour membership on 3 July 2025, announcing with the former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn that they would found a new party. 1 She sat with the Independent Alliance group of MPs before becoming, in November 2025, the first MP of the new party, named Your Party, in the House of Commons. 1
