    Summary

Yasemin Dalkılıç is a Turkish freediver, born in Ankara on 2 May 1979, who has broken eight world records in the sport of freediving. 1 Her marks include a 120 m dive in the no-limits category in 2000 and the first official world record in the constant-weight no-fins discipline, 40 m, in 2001. 1

    Early life

Dalkılıç was born and grew up in Ankara, some 270 km from the nearest coast. 1 At fourteen she was a member of the national monofin finswimming team, and by sixteen she had established herself as the best freediver in her country. 1 In 1996 she started as a student in the mathematics department at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, where she became a member of the Subaqua Society. 1

    Career

In 1998 Dalkılıç competed in the Freediving World Cup in Sardinia, where she finished first among the women. 1 From 1999 she trained under the international trainer Rudi Castineyra, and that November set her first world record with a dive to 68 m in equipment-assisted constant weight. 1 On 19 and 23 July 2000, at Bodrum, she beat the existing records in the limited and unlimited variable ballast categories, reaching 100 m and 120 m respectively. 1 In 2001 she improved her limited variable ballast mark to 105 m in Egypt, and in October 2001, at Kaş, set a 40 m record in unassisted constant ballast — the first official world record after that category was introduced. 1

    Significance

Dalkılıç was one of the pioneering women of competitive freediving, described in her biography as the fifth female world champion in the sport, with eight world records across the ballast disciplines. 1 2
