Summary
Unays ibn Qatada (may God be pleased with him) ibn Rabi'a ibn Khalid ibn al-Harith ibn Ubayd ibn Zayd ibn Malik ibn Awf ibn Amr ibn Awf, al-Ansari al-Awsi, a Companion who was present at Badr and was killed as a martyr at Uhud 1.
His entry in al-Isaba
Ibn Hajar records that Unays ibn Qatada al-Ansari al-Awsi witnessed Badr and was martyred at Uhud 1. Al-Waqidi reports through his chain to Mujammi' ibn Jariya al-Ansari that Khansa' bint Khidham had been the wife of Unays ibn Qatada, who was killed defending her at Uhud; her father then married her to a man of Muzayna whom she disliked, so she went to the Prophet ﷺ, who annulled that marriage, and Abu Lubaba married her and she bore him al-Sa'ib ibn Abi Lubaba; al-Bukhari and others transmitted this report through Malik 1. Ibn Sa'd says she came to the Prophet and he left her affair to her own decision; Ibn Hajar refers the reader to the entry of Khansa' bint Khidham for further chains of the report 2.
For younger visitors
Unays ibn Qatada was a Companion of the Ansar who fought at Badr and was killed at Uhud; the sira books tell the story of his wife Khansa', whose marriage her father arranged against her will until the Prophet dissolved it.
Notes for researchers
- His al-Isaba entry is no. 447 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, pp. 105–106); Ibn Hajar distinguishes him from Unays ibn Qatada al-Bahili al-Basri (no. 448), who has no companionship.
- The name occurs spelled "Unays" and "Anas"; the first is the sounder reading in the parallel case of the Basri namesake.
