أحيحة بن الجلاح

أحيحة بن الجلاح

Uhayha ibn al-Julah of Aws, sayyid of Banu Juhjuba and reckoned among the mightiest men of Yathrib before Islam; the Ghatafani's horse was yielded to him at the Qaynuqa market, his word loomed over the Samir war, and his order to kill Ka'b ibn Amr al-Mazini set off the Juhjuba-Mazin war in which he was routed to his fortress; and when Thaqif's Mas'ud ibn Mu'tib sought the Ansar's pact he refused — 'your brother is the one you left behind' — sending him home with a slave who built Ta'if's first fortress-tower 1.

Overview

Uhayha ibn al-Julah al-Awsi, chief of Banu Juhjuba of al-Aws, counted among the mightiest of the people of Yathrib before Islam. 2

Ibn al-Athir reports that he ordered the ambush of Ka'b ibn Amr al-Mazini until he was killed, which set off the war of Banu Juhjuba and Banu Mazin, in which he was routed and entered his fortress. 2

Mas'ud ibn Mu'attib al-Thaqafi came to him seeking the Ansar's alliance against Banu Malik; he turned him away but equipped him with a weapon, provisions and a servant who built fortifications, so he built for Ta'if its first defensive tower. 2

In al-Isaba

Ibn Hajar gives him his own entry in al-Isaba, no. 88: "Uhayha ibn al-Julah", and transmits from Malik in the Muwatta' from Urwa ibn al-Zubayr that a man of the Ansar called Uhayha ibn al-Julah killed his young uncle, on which Urwa said: for this reason a killer does not inherit from the one he killed. 3

A note on his companionship

Ibn Hajar says he could find no genealogy for this Uhayha in the Ansar lineage books, and that some writers on the Companions claimed he was Uhayha ibn al-Julah ibn Harish, also called Kharrash ibn Juhjuba; the entry lists members of his descendants who held companionship — which flags the error of counting the elder man a Companion. 3
