Abbas I (Abbas the Great)

Fifth Safavid shah of Iran (r. 1587/88-1629), third son of Mohammad Khodabanda, and the dynasty's most powerful ruler. He curbed the Qizilbash with a new ghulam army, retook the lands lost to the Uzbeks and Ottomans, expelled the Portuguese from Hormuz with English help (1622), moved the capital to Isfahan and made it a centre of art and trade, and patronised Twelver Shi'ism, walking on pilgrimage from Isfahan to Mashhad in 1601.
