    Summary

Rio Haryanto is an Indonesian racing driver and businessman, born in Surakarta on 22 January 1993. 1 He is the first Indonesian to have competed in Formula One, racing for Manor in 2016. 1

    Early life

Haryanto was born in Solo (Surakarta) to Sinyo Haryanto and Indah Pennywati, Surakarta locals of Chinese-Indonesian descent, and his three older brothers also raced nationally alongside their father. 1 He earned a business degree from Anglia Ruskin University, studying at its Singapore campus, in 2014. 1

    Career

Haryanto dominated the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific championship with eleven victories for the Meritus team, then raced in the GP3 Series in 2010–2011, winning at Istanbul Park, the Nürburgring and the Hungaroring and gaining a reputation as a wet-weather specialist. 1 In GP2 from 2012 to 2015, he took his first win in the 2015 Bahrain sprint race and finished fourth in the 2015 championship with Campos. 1 Confirmed as a Manor Racing driver for 2016, he made his Formula One debut at the Australian Grand Prix, but in August 2016 he was demoted to reserve driver when his sponsorship funding fell through and was replaced by Esteban Ocon. 1 He later raced in the Asian Le Mans Series and the Blancpain GT World Challenge Asia with T2 Motorsports. 2

    Personal life

Haryanto and his family are devout Muslims: when he raced, he fixed the Throne Verse in his car cockpit and read it as part of his pre-race ritual, and his family owns a pesantren, an Islamic boarding school. 1 2 He married Athina Papadimitriou on 5 December 2024, and after his Formula One career he went into business with his family's printing company, Kiky. 1
