Summary
Prajogo Pangestu (born Phang Djoen Phen, 13 May 1944) is an Indonesian billionaire businessman and philanthropist of Hakka Chinese descent, founder of the Barito Pacific Group, which works in forestry, petrochemicals, oil and gas, coal, gold mining and geothermal energy, and whom Forbes counts the wealthiest person in Southeast Asia 1 2.
Life
Work
In 1970 Pangestu joined Burhan Uray's timber company, the Djajanti Group, and became general manager of PT Nusantara in 1976; he left in 1977 to start his own business 1 2. His PT Barito Pacific Timber was the largest company listed on the Jakarta Stock Exchange in 1993, and the group rebranded as Barito Pacific in 2007 as it diversified into petrochemicals through Chandra Asri and geothermal energy through Star Energy; in March 2022 his Singapore-based Green Era bought BCPG's 33.33 percent of Star Energy for $440 million, giving him full control 1 2. President Joko Widodo awarded him the Bintang Jasa Utama on 13 August 2019, and with his wife he founded the Bakti Barito Foundation, the group's philanthropy arm for environmental, social, educational and community programmes 3. No prose text read for this record names a faith for Pangestu himself — the only namings are conflicting biodata and list filings (Christian in one profile, Confucian in a Wikipedia list), which settle nothing — so his faith is recorded as unknown 1 3 2 4.
