Summary
Nuri Şahin is a Turkish-German football manager and former midfielder who is head coach of İstanbul Başakşehir. 1 Born in Lüdenscheid in 1988 to Turkish parents, he became the youngest player and then the youngest scorer in Bundesliga history with Borussia Dortmund, won the league with them in 2011, and moved to Real Madrid before returning to Dortmund. 1 He earned 52 caps for Turkey. 1 The sources describe him as a Muslim in generic terms only; they name no school for him, so his data record leaves his faith as unknown. 12
The youngest in Bundesliga history
Şahin was born on 5 September 1988 in Lüdenscheid and grew up in nearby Meinerzhagen, joining Borussia Dortmund from his local club in 2001. 1 On 6 August 2005, at 16 years and 334 days, he became the youngest player ever to appear in the Bundesliga, and that November the youngest to score in it — both records stood until 2020. 1 After a loan year at Feyenoord, where he won the Dutch cup, he became central to Dortmund's 2010–11 Bundesliga title and was voted the league's player of the season. 1
Madrid, Liverpool and the return
In May 2011 Şahin signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid for a €10 million fee, but injuries limited him there; a loan to Liverpool in August 2012 was cut short so that he could return to Dortmund in January 2013, a move made permanent in 2014. 1 He won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund in 2017, then played for Werder Bremen and for Antalyaspor in Turkey before retiring in 2021. 1 For Turkey he debuted in October 2005 against the country of his birth, Germany, scoring within three minutes of coming on — at 17 years and one month he remains Turkey's youngest player and scorer — and he played at UEFA Euro 2016 before retiring internationally in 2017. 1
Into coaching
Şahin became head coach of Antalyaspor in October 2021, at first as player-manager, and led them to seventh place in the Süper Lig. 1 He left in December 2023 to become assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund, was promoted to head coach in June 2024, and was dismissed the following January after a run of defeats. 1 In September 2025 he returned to the Süper Lig as head coach of İstanbul Başakşehir. 1
Faith in the sources
The sources read for this record identify Şahin's religion only generically. The English article's personal-life section ends with the sentence "Şahin is Muslim", cited to a 2019 list article about Muslim footballers in Europe's top leagues. 1 The Arabic article likewise calls him a Muslim in passing, and Wikidata records Islam generically. 32 No source names a school or madhhab for him, and neither his Turkish parentage nor Turkey's Hanafi tradition can substitute for a personal attestation, so the data record leaves his faith as unknown.
