Overview

The judge Abu Abdallah, companion of Abu Hanifa. He died at al-Rayy in 189 AH while he was with al-Rashid, and was buried there. 2

In Ibn al-Nadim

Ibn al-Nadim says that he was a client of the Banu Shayban, born in Wasit and raised in Kufa. He heard hadith from a group that included al-Awza'i and al-Thawri, and sat with Abu Hanifa and learned from him, so that opinion (ra'y) came to predominate in him. He settled in Baghdad, then al-Rashid appointed him judge in al-Raqqa and then removed him. He accompanied al-Rashid to Khurasan and died at al-Rayy aged fifty-eight. 3

In al-Mas'udi

Al-Mas'udi says that al-Shafi'i borrowed some of his books, and wrote to him some verses, and Muhammad sent him more than he had asked for. 4
