Overview

Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath ibn Qays al-Kindi. Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad appointed him over Tabaristan, and he made peace with its people and drew up a covenant for them. They gave him time until he had entered, then they seized the passes against him and killed his son Abu Bakr, but he escaped. 1

According to al-Mas'udi, Ibn Ziyad asked him about Muslim ibn Aqil at the house of Hani ibn Urwa, and he denied it. Then he granted him safe conduct when he fought alone, and took his sword and weapons. Al-Mas'udi cites a line of a poet who reproaches him for this. 2
