In brief
Isra'il b. Yunus b. Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i, the imam and memoriser Abu Yusuf of Kufa; he heard his grandfather Abu Ishaq, Ziyad b. Ilaqa, Simak b. Harb, Mansur b. al-Mu'tamir, and a group, while Abd al-Rahman b. Mahdi, Ibn Uyayna, Muhammad b. Yusuf al-Faryabi, Abdallah b. Raja' al-Ghadani, Ahmad b. Yunus, Ali b. al-Madini, and many others narrated from him. 1
His standing
He was a memoriser, a proof, righteous and humble, one of the vessels of knowledge — the lax critics' word carries no weight, for the two shaykhs used him as proof; Isa b. Yunus said of his brother "I used to memorise Abu Ishaq's hadith as I memorise a sura of the Qur'an", and Yahya b. Ma'in called him reliable. 2
His death
He died in 162 AH, also said 161. 1
