Work
Hussain was first elected to Bradford City Council in 2002, brought a council motion opposing the invasion of Iraq in 2003, and served as deputy leader of the council from 2010 until his election to Parliament in 2015, when he declined his council allowance as a matter of principle. 1 At Westminster he held a series of Labour shadow posts from 2016, covering international development, justice, work and employment rights, and the New Deal for Working People. 1 On 8 November 2023 he resigned as a shadow minister over Keir Starmer's refusal to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, saying he wanted to be a strong advocate for a humanitarian ceasefire. 1 Re-elected in 2024, he had the Labour whip suspended on 23 July 2024 after voting for an SNP amendment to scrap the two-child benefit cap, sat as an independent, and had the whip restored on 5 February 2025. 1
