Summary

Abu 'Ali al-Hasan ibn Shihab ibn al-Hasan ibn 'Ali al-'Ukbari; born at 'Ukbara in Muharram 335; he heard hadith late in life, an accomplished faqih on Ahmad's madhhab who taught the readings, knew adab and made verse — al-Barqani called him reliable and trustworthy. 1

His copyist's trade

He earned twenty-five thousand dirhams in the warraq trade — buying paper for five dirhams, copying al-Mutanabbi's diwan in three nights and selling it for a hundred and fifty; the sultan took from his estate a thousand dinars besides the property he left, though he had willed a third of his wealth to the Hanbali students — they got nothing; he died on mid-Rajab night 428. 1
