Summary

Abu 'Abdallah Muhammad ibn Khafif al-Shirazi, shaykh of the province of Fars and a man of states and stations; al-Sulami said he is today the shaykh of shaykhs and the era's landmark — none older in years nor more complete in state remained to the people; he held fast to Book and Sunna, a faqih on al-Shafi'i's madhhab; he was of amirs' sons yet renounced the world until he said: I used to gather rags from the middens, wash them and mend from them what I wore. 1

His teacher

He travelled to Shaykh Abu'l-Hasan al-Ash'ari and took from him — among his noblest pupils; Ahmad ibn Yahya said: I see tasawwuf sealed with Abu 'Abdallah Ibn Khafif; al-Subki called him shaykh of shaykhs, firm of foot in knowledge and religion; he prayed over him nearly a hundred times. 1
