Overview
Abu Muhammad b. Baraka al-Umani, commonly called Ibn Baraka, was an Ibadi author from the township of Bahla in Oman. The encyclopaedia's entry, signed by T. Lewicki, says that the precise dates of his life are not known. The Umani Ibadi writer Ibn Mudad regards him as a disciple and partisan of the imam Sa'id b. 'Abd Allah b. Mahbub, who was killed in 328/939-40. 1
Political life and works
He played a considerable part in the political life of Oman and composed several historical and juridical works, of which the article lists as extant: al-Diami, on the principles of law; al-Muwazana, on the condition of Oman at the time of the imam al-Salt b. Malik, with some points of principle; al-Sira, a similar work; Madh al-'ilm, in praise of knowledge and those who pursue it; al-Takyid; al-Ta'arut; and al-Sharh li-Diami Ibn Ja'far, a commentary on al-Diami by Abu Jabir Muhammad b. Ja'far al-Azkawi. 1
