Summary
Faisal Islam (born 1977) is a British political and economics journalist. He is the economics editor of BBC News, and was previously economics editor of Channel 4 News and political editor of Sky News. 1
Life
Islam was born in Manchester to Bengali parents from West Bengal, India, and was brought up in Didsbury and Longsight. The English article gives his birth as 29 May 1977 but flags the date as needing a citation; the Arabic article gives the year as 1978, and Wikidata carries all three readings, so only the year 1977 is recorded, as debated. 1 2 3 He was educated at Manchester Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge, and took a master's degree in newspaper journalism at City, University of London in 2000. 1
Work
Islam was an economics correspondent for The Observer before joining Channel 4 News in May 2004 as business correspondent, later becoming its economics editor; his reporting on the Icelandic banking crisis won the Wincott Foundation's 2009 award for television coverage of a topical issue and the Business Journalist of the Year award. 1 In 2014 he succeeded Adam Boulton as political editor of Sky News. 1 In the summer of 2019 he replaced Kamal Ahmed as economics editor of BBC News, and since 2020 he has occasionally presented Newsnight. 1 His earlier awards include the Wincott Award for Young Financial Journalist of the Year in 2000 and Young Journalist of the Year at the Royal Television Society awards in 2006, and in 2017 he won the RTS Interview of the Year award for his interview with David Cameron. 1
