Early life and education
Hassabis was born in London to Costas and Angela Hassapis; his father is a Greek Cypriot and his mother a Chinese Singaporean, and he grew up in North London. A chess prodigy who reached master standard at thirteen, he bought his first computer from chess winnings and taught himself to program. After early work in video games at Bullfrog Productions he studied computer science at the University of Cambridge, founded the games company Elixir Studios, and then took a doctorate in neuroscience at University College London in 2009. 1
Career and research
In 2010 Hassabis co-founded DeepMind in London; Google acquired the company in 2014. Under his leadership DeepMind produced AlphaGo, which defeated the world-class Go player Lee Sedol in 2016, and AlphaFold, whose protein-structure predictions earned Hassabis and John Jumper the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, along with the Breakthrough Prize, the Gairdner Award and the Lasker Award. He founded the drug-discovery company Isomorphic Labs in 2021, was appointed CBE in 2017 and knighted in 2024, and serves as a UK government AI adviser. The article as read records his move to chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. 1
Religion
His faith is recorded as unknown. No source read names any religious affiliation for him: the English, Arabic, Persian and Urdu articles are silent on religion, and Wikidata carries no religion value. His parentage — a Greek Cypriot father and a Chinese Singaporean mother — is family background, not attestation, and his public commentary on philosophy and consciousness is not an affiliation statement either way. 1 2 3
