Early life and education
Dasad Latif was born in Bungi, Pinrang, on 21 December 1973. He studied on two parallel tracks: a bachelor's degree in communications at Hasanuddin University in 1998 and a bachelor's in Islamic judicature at IAIN Alauddin Makassar in 2000, then a master's in communications at Hasanuddin in 2004, a PhD in communications at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2016, and a second doctorate in sharia and law at UIN Alauddin Makassar in 2018. 1
Career
Since 1 April 2006 Latif has been a permanent lecturer in communications at Hasanuddin University's Faculty of Social and Political Sciences. His preaching reputation rests on a light style mixing fiqh, exhortation and local Bugis humour; he became a familiar face on televised dakwah programmes and at official and popular events, and his YouTube channel counts millions of subscribers. In the 2013 election he ran for deputy mayor of Makassar alongside mayoral candidate Tamsil Linrung; the pair placed third with about 93,868 votes. 1
Books
Latif's books include Dari Hati ke Hati (From Heart to Heart), Islam yang Diperdebatkan (Islam Debated) and published collections of his lectures. 1
Reach
His YouTube channel, @DasadLatif, has about 3.9 million subscribers by the platform count recorded in the lane's harvest — a dated figure, not a fact verified by the museum. 1
