Notes
- The data are scarce; his life and death need an additional source.
In al-Dhahabi's Siyar
Al-Dhahabi describes him as the imam and consummate scholar, mufti of Egypt, Abu 'Amr al-Qaysi al-'Amiri the Egyptian jurist; his given name is said to have been Miskin, Ashhab being a sobriquet. He was born in 140 AH. 3
He heard Malik ibn Anas, al-Layth ibn Sa'd, Yahya ibn Ayyub, Sulayman ibn Bilal, Bakr ibn Mudar, Dawud ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-'Attar and others; Sahnun ibn Sa'id the jurist of the Maghreb, 'Abd al-Malik ibn Habib the jurist of al-Andalus, Muhammad ibn 'Abdallah ibn 'Abd al-Hakam and more narrated from him. It suffices him that al-Shafi'i said "Egypt produced no one more versed in fiqh than Ashhab". He died eighteen days after al-Shafi'i. 3
