Summary
Ali Shaheed Muhammad, born in Brooklyn, New York City, on 11 August 1970, is an American hip-hop DJ, record producer, rapper and bass guitarist, best known as a member of A Tribe Called Quest. 1 He was also a member of the R&B supergroup Lucy Pearl, and in recent years has become known for his jazz collaborations with producer Adrian Younge. 1 The article states that he is a Muslim. 1
Career
Muhammad was born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighbourhood; he began to DJ at the age of eight and to program music at thirteen. 1 He befriended Q-Tip at Murry Bergtraum High School in Manhattan, and in 1985 they began making demos together and formed A Tribe Called Quest, which released five studio albums from 1990 to 1998 and a final album in 2016. 1 After the group disbanded he formed Lucy Pearl with Dawn Robinson and Raphael Saadiq, releasing one album in 2000, and released his debut solo album, Shaheedullah and Stereotypes, on 12 October 2004. 1 In 2013 he moved to Los Angeles to work with Adrian Younge; together they co-produced the soundtracks of both seasons of the television series Luke Cage, toured as the Midnight Hour, and in 2020 launched the Jazz Is Dead album series with partners including Roy Ayers, Marcos Valle and Gary Bartz, with Muhammad as the project's main bass guitarist. 1
Works
His works include the A Tribe Called Quest albums (1990–1998; final album 2016), Lucy Pearl (2000) with Lucy Pearl, his solo album Shaheedullah and Stereotypes (2004), the Luke Cage soundtracks with Adrian Younge, and the Jazz Is Dead series from 2020. 1
Positions and criticism
This section sets out different positions as reported in the sources. It is not a verdict by the museum.
His faith as the sources state it. The article states in a single sentence, at the end of its early-life section, that "Muhammad is a Muslim", citing a forum page that is now a dead link, and files him in the categories Converts to Islam and African-American Muslims. 1 Wikidata gives only Islam generically. 2 No source names a legal school for him, and there is no Arabic or Urdu article; his record therefore carries his faith as unknown, with the attestation recorded verbatim. 1
