Overview

Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Waqid, a client of the Banu Hashim, author of the books of biography and campaigns. He was weakened as a transmitter of hadith. He died in 209 AH at the age of seventy-seven. 2

Ibn Khaldun counts him with al-Mas'udi among the great historians, while noting the errors in their books. 3 Ibn al-Nadim says that he shared with Abu Mikhnaf and al-Madaini in writing the "Conquests of Syria". 4

Among his reports in al-Mas'udi is the story of the thousand dirhams that a Hashimite friend of his gave him in kindness; the news reached al-Ma'mun, who gave them seven thousand dinars. 2
