al-Nu'man ibn Jabala al-Tanukhi

النعمان بن جبلة التنوخي

Tanukh and Bahra's bannerman in Mu'awiya's host — whose devastatingly honest reply at Siffin survives: 'I preferred your kingship over my religion and abandoned right-guidance knowing it... we fight for the Ghuta's figs and olives since Paradise's fruits are denied us' 1.

Overview

Al-Nu'man ibn Jabala al-Tanukhi, bearer of the banner of Tanukh and Bahra' in the army of Mu'awiya at Siffin. 1

His answer to Mu'awiya

Al-Mas'udi relates that when the killing lengthened among the people of Syria, Mu'awiya answered with a well-known saying. In it he said that he advised him about himself, preferred his kingship over his religion, and left right guidance for his desire though he knew it. He said they would fight for the figs and olives of Ghuta, since they had been deprived of the fruits and rivers of Paradise. Then he pressed on to war. 1
