Overview
Al-Mustanjid billah, Abu al-Mahasin Yusuf ibn al-Mutawakkil, an Abbasid caliph in Cairo who ruled from 859 to 884 AH, the caliph of al-Suyuti's own age. 2
His accession
He came to the caliphate after his brother was deposed, when the sultan was al-Ashraf Inal. He then appointed al-Mu'ayyad Ahmad ibn Jaqmaq, then al-Zahir Khushqadam, then Yalbay, then Tumurbugha, then al-Ashraf Qaytbay. 2
When Khushqadam was first appointed, the viceroy of Syria Janam came, and he ordered the caliph, the four judges and the army to ascend to the citadel. Then al-Zahir did not allow him to return to his residence, so he remained in the citadel until he died. 2
His death
He died on Saturday, the twenty-fourth of Muharram 884 AH, after an illness of nearly two years of paralysis. He was prayed over in the citadel and buried in the caliphs' tomb beside the Nafisi shrine. He had reached ninety or passed it. 2
