Overview
Al-Mu'ayyad ibn al-Mutawakkil, brother of al-Mu'tazz, and the third whom al-Mutawakkil named for the caliphate. 1
Deposition and death
According to al-Suyuti, al-Mu'tazz deposed him from the heirship in Rajab, beat him and fettered him, and he died a few days later. Al-Mu'tazz feared it would be said that he had killed him, so he brought the judges to see him, and there was no mark on him. 1
According to al-Mas'udi, al-Mu'tazz imprisoned him and his brother Abu Ahmad when it reached him that he was plotting against him. He was beaten forty strokes until he agreed to depose himself, and he was brought out dead on Thursday, eight days before the end of Rajab 252 AH. It is said that he was wrapped in a poisoned quilt and its two ends were tied until he died. 2
Notes for researchers
- The two accounts differ on the cause of death; the second is given with "it is said", so it is not stated as certain.
