Overview
The qadi Abu'l-Faraj al-Mu'afa b. Zakariya al-Nahrawani; jurist, littérateur, poet, versed in every art — he held Baghdad's judgeship, transmitting from Abu'l-Qasim al-Baghawi, Abu Bakr Ibn Dawud, Yahya b. Sa'id and others; the qadi Abu'l-Tayyib al-Tabari the Shafi'i transmitted from him. 1
His standing
It was said: when qadi Abu'l-Faraj attends, all the sciences attend; and said: if a man bequeathed a third of his wealth to the most learned of people, it must go to Abu'l-Faraj al-Mu'afa — trustworthy and reliable in transmission; his are the Kitab al-jalis al-anis and other works; Shaykh Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi mentions him in the Tabaqat al-fuqaha and praises him. 1
