Overview
Al-Mawardi the player, a chess player who was favoured by the caliph al-Muktafi. 1 His full name is not known from the data.
The match
It was mentioned to al-Muktafi that Abu Bakr al-Suli was a good player, so he played with al-Mawardi in his presence. Al-Mas'udi describes al-Muktafi's inclination towards al-Mawardi, and that he put friendship before supporting al-Suli. 1
When the game went on, al-Suli beat him severely, so al-Muktafi turned from his favour. He said to him: "Your rose-water has become urine." 1
Notes for researchers
- There is no other report than this one; the rest of his life needs an additional source.
