Overview

Jaysh ibn Khumarawayh ibn Ahmad ibn Tulun, of the Tulunid family in Egypt. He was given the allegiance to rule Egypt after his father was killed in 282 AH, then he was seized and his brother Harun was set up in his place. 2 3

The allegiance

Al-Mas'udi relates that the allegiance to him was given the next day, when the news of his father's killing reached him in Damascus, and that he went out to meet his father's coffin at the gate of Egypt. 2

Unrest and deposition

Al-Mas'udi says that he marched from Syria to Egypt with his armies in 283 AH, that Tughj opposed him at Damascus, and that unrest broke out in Egypt in which Ali ibn Ahmad al-Mardani was killed, Jaysh was seized, and his brother Harun was set up. 3

Other reports

Ibn al-Jawzi says that Khumarawayh succeeded his father in 282 AH, and that they killed him and plundered his house. 4

Notes for researchers

  • The text names him as the son of "Abu al-Jaysh Khumarawayh"; Ibn al-Jawzi's wording needs to be compared to establish who was killed.
