Overview

Al-Hawfazan b. Shurayk al-Shaybani, famed for generosity and valour, brother of Mitr b. Shurayk's grandfather; he was called al-Hawfazan because Qays b. 'Asim al-Minqari urged him on with a spear when he feared he would escape — hafaza meaning to push from behind — though it is also said the one who urged him was Bistam b. Qays al-Shaybani. 1
