al-Ghadban ibn al-Qab'athari

الغضبان بن القبعثري الشيباني

The Shaybani wit who preached Kufa to kill al-Hajjaj on the road before it counted as insurrection — jailed three years, freed when only his bedouin-raider-drinker's vocabulary could parse Abd al-Malik's letter, and released again after judging the Green Dome 'built not in your land nor for your son' 1.

Overview

Al-Ghadban ibn al-Qabathari al-Shaybani, a notable of the Banu Shayban and a man of Kufa. 2

With al-Hajjaj

Al-Mas'udi relates that when al-Hajjaj took office, he stood as a preacher in the mosque and called for opposing him on the road and killing him, saying that this would not count as deposing him. 2

It is said that he was the one who said to Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Ash'ath: "Have your morning meal with al-Hajjaj before he has his evening meal with you." 2

Al-Hajjaj imprisoned him for three years, until he needed his coarse wit for a letter of Abd al-Malik about the qualities of slave-girls. He then released him after the affair of the green dome at Wasit. 2
