In 196 al-Ma'mun raised his rank, appointed him over the East and named him 'Dhu al-Riyasatayn' 1. After the battle of al-Rayy, Tahir wrote to him: 'May God prolong your life and humble your enemies. My letter reaches you with the head of Ali ibn Isa before me and his ring on my finger' 2. He gained such sway over al-Ma'mun that he pressed him over a slave-girl he wished to buy; then he was killed, and some claimed that al-Ma'mun had secretly sent someone to kill him 3.

Overview

Al-Fadl ibn Sahl, vizier of al-Ma'mun. Al-Ma'mun raised his standing in the year 196 AH and appointed him over the East, and gave him the title "Holder of the Two Commands". 1

In the report

After the battle of al-Rayy, Tahir wrote a letter to him in which he mentioned that the head of Ali ibn Isa was before him and his ring was on his finger. 4

Al-Mas'udi relates that he came to dominate al-Ma'mun, to the point of pressing him over a slave-girl he wanted to buy, and that he was then killed. Some people claimed that al-Ma'mun had sent someone to kill him. 5

This claim is attributed by al-Mas'udi to "some people", and is not established here. The circumstances and date of his killing need an additional source.
