Overview

Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl ibn Dukayn ibn 'Amr, the firm memoriser, was a Kufan merchant of the Mulla'i quarter and a client of Talha ibn 'Ubaydallah al-Taymi. Born in 130 AH, he was killed by Kharijites at the end of Sha'ban 219 AH. 2 1

Transmission and standing

He heard al-A'mash, Zakariyya ibn Abi Za'ida, 'Umar ibn Dharr, Ja'far ibn Burqan, Aflah ibn Humayd and a multitude; Ahmad, Ishaq, Yahya ibn Ma'in, al-Dhuhli, al-Bukhari, al-Darimi and even Ibn al-Mubarak — though older — narrated from him. Ahmad called him "trustworthy, vigilant, knowledgeable in hadith"; Ibn Ma'in said "I never saw two men firmer among the living than Abu Nu'aym and 'Affan"; and Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab al-Farra' said "we feared Abu Nu'aym more than the awe of rulers". 2
