Overview

'Abdallah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Fadl ibn Bahram al-Tamimi al-Darimi of Samarqand, Abu Muhammad, author of the Musnad and shaykh of Imam al-Bukhari, was born in 181 AH, the year Ibn al-Mubarak died. 2

Travels and teachers

He heard al-Nadr ibn Shumayl, Yazid ibn Harun, Sa'id ibn 'Amir and many others in the two sanctuaries, Khurasan, Syria and Iraq. Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah and 'Abdallah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal narrated from him. 2

Standing and works

Al-Khatib counted him among the travelling memorisers, marked by trustworthiness, scrupulosity and renunciation; appointed judge of Samarqand he judged a single case then asked to be excused. Abu Hatim called him "trustworthy, truthful"; Ahmad ibn Hanbal said al-Darimi was offered the world and refused it; Ibn Abi Hatim reported his father calling him the imam of his time. He composed the Musnad, a Tafsir and the Kitab al-Jami', and died in the days of al-Mu'tazz. 2 1
