Overview

Ahmad ibn al-Tayyib al-Sarakhsi, the brilliant philosopher and prolific author Abu al-'Abbas, pupil of the philosopher Ya'qub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi. 2

At al-Mu'tadid's court

He was al-Mu'tadid's tutor, then became his boon-companion, keeper of his secrets and adviser, enjoying great rank and standing. But al-Mu'tadid turned to God and had him killed for his philosophy and corrupt creed; it is said he disavowed it and claimed to have sold his books of philosophy, astrology and kalam keeping only books of fiqh and hadith, whereupon al-Mu'tadid declared him a zindiq acting in dissimulation. He died in 286 AH. 2
