Ahmad ibn al-Mu'adhdhal

أحمد بن المعذل

A scholar gathered by al-Mutawakkil; alone he kept his seat — 'it is not my sight; I held you above God's torment, for the Prophet ﷺ said whoever loves that men stand for him, let him take his seat in the Fire' — and the caliph came and sat beside him 1.

Overview

Ahmad ibn al-Mu'adhdhal, a scholar, mentioned in a report of al-Suyuti with the caliph al-Mutawakkil. 1

The report

Al-Mutawakkil gathered the scholars in his house, and everyone stood up for him except Ahmad. It was said that he had some weakness of sight, but he said his sight was not weak, and that he wanted to keep himself clear of God's punishment. He related a hadith from the Prophet condemning those who like men to stand up for them. Then al-Mutawakkil came and sat beside him. 1

His life and the years he lived need an additional source.
