Overview

Al-Hasan ibn Hani al-Hakami, the poet of the early Abbasid age, known as Abu Nuwas. 2

On describing wine

Al-Mas'udi says that in describing wine Abu Nuwas took up its light, taste, scent, colour and radiance, its effect on the soul, its vessels and jars, and the drinking gatherings over it between morning and evening. Al-Mas'udi considers that he almost closed the door on this subject. 2

Among the verses al-Mas'udi quotes from him is one that compares wine to a sun in the hand of the cupbearer and a moon in his palm, and another that begins "I woke up, and there is no dawn but the light of the wine." 2
