Overview

Abu Khalifa al-Fadl ibn al-Habbab al-Jumahi, a client of the Banu Jumah of Quraysh, and the orator of the people of Basra. 1

His eloquence

Al-Mas'udi describes him as their eloquent companion who did not strain over grammar, which had become second nature to him. 1

The delegation of Basra

He came in the delegation of the people of Basra to al-Mu'tadid in white greased boats, complaining of drought and the injustice of the governors. He addressed them in his well-known rhymed prose. The vizier al-Qasim ibn Ubayd Allah answered a question on the shares of inheritance for camels. 1

Al-Mu'tadid said of him: "This is a devil the sea has cast up", and that men like him should go to the kings. He then wrote to them what they asked for. 1

His later life

He afterwards held the judgeship, and died in Basra in 305 AH. 1
