Overview

Abu Bakr ibn al-Ikhshid, a scholar whose view on the origin of the name of the Mu'tazila Ibn al-Nadim records. 2

His view on the origin of the name

He said that the name "Mu'tazila" came to them in the days of al-Hasan, as some people reported, and that this was not established in his view. The well-known view among his scholars is that the name arose after al-Hasan. Its cause was that when al-Hasan died and Qatada took his session, Amr ibn Ubayd withdrew from it with a group, and Qatada called them the Mu'tazila. 2

What is not covered here: his biography and his date of death. A second source is needed.
