In brief

Abu Asim al-Dahhak b. Makhlad al-Shaybani of Basra, the memoriser and shaykh al-Islam known as al-Nabil for his nobility and intellect; he heard Ja'far b. Muhammad, Yazid b. Abi Ubayd, Sulayman al-Taymi, Ibn Jurayj, Bahz b. Hakim, and the elders — had his death not come first he would be counted with Waki', indeed with Ibn al-Mubarak; Ahmad, Bundar, al-Darimi, al-Bukhari, al-Harith b. Abi Usama, Abu Muslim al-Kajji, and others narrated from him. 2

Memory and scruple

He never narrated except from memory; Umar b. Shabba said "by God I never saw his like", al-Bukhari and others heard him say "I have not backbitten anyone since I learned that ghiba harms its people", Abu Dawud said "Abu Asim kept some thousand hadiths of the choicest", and Ibn Sa'd called him "reliable, a jurist". 3

His death

He died at Basra fourteen nights into Dhu al-Hijja of 212 AH, having lived eighty years and some months. 3
