Overview
Abu al-Khattar Husam ibn Dirar al-Kalbi, amir of al-Andalus appointed by Handhala ibn Safwan, governor of Ifriqiya. He sailed from Tunis to al-Andalus in 125 AH, and its people gave him their allegiance. Al-Maqqari describes him as brave, generous, and of sound judgement and firmness. 2
The distribution of the Syrians
The Syrians multiplied under him and Cordoba could not hold them, so he dispersed them through the country. He settled the people of Damascus at Elvira and named it Damascus; the people of Homs at Seville and named it Homs; the people of Qinnasrin at Jaen; the people of Jordan at Rayya and Malaga; the people of Palestine at Shadhuna; and the people of Egypt at Tudmir, which he named Egypt. 2
His removal and death
Al-Maqqari says that he went to extremes in his partisanship for his Yemeni people, so the Mudari al-Samil ibn Hatim stirred against him, and he was deposed in 128 AH. Then he rose against Yusuf al-Fihri, and al-Samil killed him in 129 AH. 2
