Encyclopaedia of Islam account
The Encyclopaedia of Islam (2nd ed.), signed by A. de Motylinski and T. Lewicki, gives Abu l-Ghazi Bahadur Khan, ruler of Khiva and historian of the Chaghatay, as born probably on 16 Rabi' I 1012/24 August 1603, of the Uzbek Shaybanid dynasty. After exile at the court of the Safavids, mostly at Isfahan, from 1039/1629 for about ten years, he gained his knowledge of Persian sources, and then learned Mongol traditions at the Kalmuk court. After the death of his brother Isfandiyar in 1052/1642 he became khan of Khiva in 1054/1644-5. The article records his expeditions against the Turkmen tribes and Bukhara, and his death in 1074/1663 shortly after he abdicated. 1
