Abu Abdallah al-Baridi

أبو عبد الله أحمد بن محمد البريدي

Eldest of the Baridi brothers; tax-farmer of the khassa who scorned it — 'my drum has a voice that will soon be heard' — and bought his way through Ibn Muqla's vizierate to all of Ahwaz, while Ibn Makula and Ibn Miskawayh disputed the nisba's spelling 1.

Overview

Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Baridi, the eldest of the Baridi brothers. He was among the special men of Ahwaz, and his brother Abu Yusuf was over Sari when Ali ibn Isa became vizier. 1

When Ibn Muqla became vizier, his brother Abu al-Husayn gave him twenty thousand dinars, and he appointed Abu Abd Allah over all of Ahwaz except Sus and Jundaysabur. 1

Ibn al-Athir mentions a dispute over the vocalisation of the nisba: Ibn Makula vowelled it with a "ba" as derived from the post (al-barid), and Ibn Miskawayh with a "ya". 1
