Summary
Abdallah ibn Suhayl ibn Amr — Abu Suhayl — his mother Fakhita bint Amir ibn Nawfal ibn Abd Manaf, a Companion among the emigrants to Abyssinia, who took the pledge of safety for his father on the day of the Conquest, and was martyred at al-Yamama aged eighty-eight 1.
The Abyssinian emigration and his escape at Badr
Ibn Ishaq names him among the emigrants to Abyssinia, and Ibn Manda transmits with his chain to Ibn Abbas: "and among those who emigrated to Abyssinia was Abdallah ibn Suhayl ibn Amr"; al-Baladhuri says his companionship is agreed 1. Al-Waqidi says his father seized him after he returned from Abyssinia and made him renounce his faith, so he outwardly recanted and marched out with them to Badr — then fled to the Muslims; he was afterwards one of the witnesses at the truce of al-Hudaybiyya, was older than his brother Abu Jandal, and it was he who obtained the safe-conduct for his father on the day of the Conquest; Suhayl used to say after that: God has granted much good to my son in Islam 1. Al-Baghawi transmits from Ibn Shihab and from Ibn Ishaq the story of his flight from his father at Badr: he was with his father, left him and crossed over to the Muslims and stayed with them 1.
His hadith and death
He was asked about the three times of privacy (the 'awrat), as in the Maghazi of A'idh from al-Zuhri from Tha'laba ibn Abi Malik who asked Abdallah ibn Suhayl al-Harithi 1. This Abdallah was martyred at al-Yamama — or, it is said, at Jawatha in Bahrayn — aged eighty-eight years 1. Ibn Manda made him two separate entries, though he is the brother of Abu Jandal and son of Suhayl ibn Amr ibn Abd Shams 2.
For younger visitors
Abdallah ibn Suhayl was a Companion who emigrated to Abyssinia; his father Suhayl ibn Amr then forced him to recant, he went out with his father's people to Badr and fled to the Muslim ranks, witnessed the truce of al-Hudaybiyya, obtained safety for his father on the day Mecca was conquered, and was martyred later at al-Yamama.
Notes for researchers
- His two al-Isaba entries are nos. 5222 and 5223 (al-Maktaba al-Asriyya scan, pp. 892–893); Ibn Manda split him into two while others preferred he is one man.
- The place of martyrdom has two reports: al-Yamama, or Jawatha in Bahrayn; his age eighty-eight as per the text.
