    Summary

Abdelaziz al-Karaouri (died 31 May 2025) was a Moroccan jurist, imam and reciter from Casablanca, known for his devout voice and polished recitation, who trained many memorisers of the Qur'an and students of religious learning. 1 2

    Career

Born and raised in Casablanca's Derb al-Fuqara quarter, he memorised the Qur'an as a young man. He led prayers at the al-Tawba and al-Taysir mosques and then at al-Qadi Iyad Mosque in Sidi Maarouf, which drew large congregations for the tarawih. 1

He also worked as an education officer at a private school from 1999 and was active in Qur'an associations and religious life in Morocco. The article says that as a young man he sang at wedding halls, and that he left this in the late 1990s to devote himself to the Qur'an. 1

    Death

He died on 31 May 2025 after a long illness with cancer, at a private clinic in Bouskoura near Casablanca; the funeral prayer at al-Qadi Iyad Mosque drew a large crowd of worshippers and scholars, and he was buried at Sidi Mas'ud cemetery. 1 2
