Overview
Abd Allah ibn Ali ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Abbas, one of the senior Abbasids. Al-Baladhuri says that he was residing in Basra, and that Abu al-Asad was the one who brought him into Kufa. 1
In Syria
Al-Mas'udi relates that he demolished the palace of Marwan at Harran, settled in Damascus and besieged it, and camped at the river of Abu Futrus, and killed some eighty men of the Umayyads. 2
The dispute with al-Mansur
He called to himself those who were with him of the people of Syria, claiming that al-Saffah had made the caliphate for whoever was appointed to fight Marwan. He and Abu Muslim fought for months, then he fled to Basra to his brother Sulayman. 3 In al-Baladhuri, the people of Basra gathered at his door to give him allegiance, and Sulayman restrained them (the gathering of the people of Basra). 1
His last days
He remained in prison for nine years, then al-Mas'udi says that al-Mansur ordered him killed, and he was buried in the cemetery of Abu Suwayd at the Gate of Syria. 4
