'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Attab ibn Usayd

عبد الرحمن بن عتاب بن أسيد

The 'queen-bee of Quraysh' killed at the Camel — Ali's mourning over him drew al-Ashtar's rebuke and the famous answer 'women rose between me and them who never rose between me and you'; his severed hand was found days later at Mina, seal-ring intact, dropped by an eagle 1.

Overview

Abd al-Rahman ibn Attab ibn Usayd (may God be pleased with him) was among the dead of the Battle of the Camel. 1

After the battle

Al-Mas'udi relates that Ali described him as "the chief of Quraysh", and said words standing over him in which he lamented the dead of the Banu Abd Manaf. Al-Ashtar said to him: how intense is your grief over them; and Ali answered him with his reply. 1

He is said to have had a hand struck at Mina, or it is said at al-Yamama, where an eagle dropped it with a ring engraved with his name, three days after the Camel. 1
