Summary

Sabily is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu, designed for Muslim users: it came with Arabic support and Islamic software installed out of the box, among them a prayer-times tool, a Qur'an study tool and a Hijri calendar. It was first released as Ubuntu Muslim Edition (UbuntuME), was developed between 2007 and 2011, and is now discontinued. 1

Releases

Sabily followed Ubuntu's release schedule. Ubuntu Muslim Edition 7.04 came out on 12 October 2007, 7.10 on 2 December 2007, 8.04 on 17 May 2008 and 8.04.1 on 22 July 2008. The name changed to Sabily with 9.04 "Taibah" on 12 May 2009, followed by 9.10 "Gaza" on 27 December 2009, 10.04 "Manarat" on 28 June 2010, 11.04 "Badr" on 5 May 2011 and the last, 11.10 "Uhud", on 19 December 2011. 1 It was distributed in three editions: a small one with the core packages, a full one adding multimedia and educational software, and an "ultimate" one adding offline Qur'an recitations by Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, Saad al-Ghamdi, Mishary Rashid Alafasy and others. 1

The software

The distribution included Zekr, for browsing and studying the Qur'an with downloadable recitations and translations; Minbar, which runs in the background and plays the adhan at prayer times by the usual calculation methods; Monajat, which shows adhkar and hadiths; a Firefox extension showing prayer times; a Hijri calendar; two mushaf viewers; an electronic encyclopaedia called Thwab; and parental-control and web-filtering tools. 1 Among its community's programs was Zakat Calc, written in Gambas, which works out zakat on gold, silver, savings, trade, livestock and crops. 1 Its Arabic packages included the Amiri naskh typeface. 1

Today

Development stopped after 2011, and the article notes that there is no official host for its images today. It has articles in fourteen Wikipedia editions, among them Arabic, Persian, Indonesian, Uyghur and Hausa. 1 2
